Easter SealsEaster Seals of Central & Southeast Ohio Inc. - Funding to establish and conduct an overnight camping opportunity at Camp Hervida for children with disabilities. $3,500

Thoughts from Melanie Alloway, office manager at Easter Seals of the River Cities, on receiving $3,500 for the organization's 2001 Summer Camp:
"We were able to have a camp for 15 disabled children. These kids had a wonderful time and look forward to coming again. The smiles I saw were worth a million. Thanks to MCF for helping us help those kids have a memorable time."

Ely Chapman Ely Chapman Education Foundation -To renovate kitchen and install equipment needed for health department certification to be licensed with the Department of Jobs and Family Services for reimbursement for services provided to at-risk youth $16,500

Thoughts from Alice Ely Chapman, chair of the Ely Chapman Education Foundation, on receiving money for the construction of a new kitchen and funding for tuition grants from the Dorothy Oyster Memorial Fund:
"The money we received will pay for the renovations and installation of our commercial kitchen. Having a good licensed kitchen in the building will allow us to get the S.U.N.S.H.I.N.E. Learning Station licensed as an after-school facility. This will improve the funding of that program as the state will pay for the child care of about half our students. We will also be able to host large parties as well as have spaghetti dinners or pancake breakfast fund-raisers. Our different programs will be assured that the food they serve their participants is properly stored as well, improving the health and wellness of all participants.

"The tuition grants we received have helped students with severe learning problems attend our program and get the additional tutoring and homework help they need. Their self-esteem will improve as they start getting better grades in the program."

Barlow
Barlow Agricultural & Mechanical Association - For installation of heating and air conditioning, insulation and windows in the refurbished community center located on Barlow Fairgrounds $5,000

Thoughts from Sidney Brackenridge, secretary/treasurer of the Barlow Fair Board, on receiving a recent MCF grant:
"The grant helped us by allowing the Barlow Fair Board to upgrade a facility from a 'fair and limited event' building to a building closer to compatibility with the needs and events of the surrounding community."

Matamoras Area Historical Society - For repairs on property purchased adjacent to the Matamoras Museum $4,000

Thoughts from Lila E. Hill, president of the Matamoras Area Historical Society Inc., on receiving a $4,000 grant:
"The Matamoras Area Historical Society became the owner of property adjacent to our museum in New Matamoras, Ohio. This property had been neglected for several years and was in dire need of repairs and restoration. The first order of business was to replace the leaky roof before winter came. The $4,000 grant from Marietta Community Foundation enabled our society to replace the roof and the spouting on our annex. Since the Marietta Community Foundation gave us our very first grant, we feel that they gave us the encouragement to forge ahead.

"One of the benefits of having a community foundation in our area has been that it has enabled me to have personal contact with the board and the office. Applying for a grant certainly was a new undertaking for me and being able to stop in the office to talk with Carol and to get advice made my job much easier."

Marietta City Schools - Matching grant for nutrition program $57,533

Thoughts from Dora Jean Bumgarner, superintendent of Marietta City Schools, about receiving a recent $100,000 grant:
"The money from the Foundation permitted Marietta City Schools to purchase equipment for the main kitchen at the high school to implement the school nutrition program. Marietta City Schools would not have the nutrition program for the 3,500 students in Marietta City Schools without the benefit of the Marietta Community Foundation. On behalf of the students of Marietta City Schools, we thank the Foundation very much for this financial assistance."

Youth Cultural Center - Seed money to establish a financial base from which we can support an executive director until funding is established in 1999 $20,000

Thoughts from Jean Peterson, program director of the Youth Cultural Center Inc., on receiving several grants:
"We received a grant in 1998 from the Marietta Community Foundation for the startup of our organization. Without your help, we could not have opened our doors to give the middle school students in Marietta their own place, designed by kids, for kids. With your help, we became "The Hangout," an active place for students in grades six, seven and eight to join friends and gain life lessons and emotional support all the while helping to build self-esteem.

"The Foundation also has supplied bookkeeping and clerical assistance in 1999 and 2000. This relieved the responsibilities of both the interim director and the board secretary and greatly aided our organization with accurate record keeping.

"I believe we benefit from a community foundation in this area because they know the needs of the community and care about making our community a better place to learn, work and live. Thank you for your support of the youth in our community."

ONeill O'Neill Senior Center Inc. - For matching funds to obtain a new van equipped with a wheelchair lift $6,890

Thoughts from Terry Zdrale, director of the O'Neill Senior Center, on receiving several grants through the years:
"The MCF has provided funds that have allowed the O'Neill Center to acquire a number of handicapped vehicles that are used to transport hundreds of elderly persons to medical appointments, treatment centers and adult day care. The foundation also has supported many other vital services and activities offered by O'Neill to seniors throughout the county. These important services and activities enable older adults in Washington County to live independent, healthy and productive lives in their later years."
