Fourth Quarter Grants Awarded
Posted 2007-01-16 by MCF

MARIETTA, OH, December 22, 2000 --- Marietta Community Foundation is pleased to announce Fourth quarter grants in the amount of $56,308.
  • Barlow Agricultural & Mechanical Association, Inc. was awarded a grant in the amount of $5,000.  This grant will be used to help with the installation of heating and air conditioning, insulation and windows in the refurbished community center located at the Barlow Fairgrounds.  The goal of having a building such as this is to promote the unity of community. The community center will provide a centrally located indoor meeting facility accessible to the entire Barlow-Vincent community.
  • Marietta Family YMCA was awarded a grant in the amount of $4,029. These funds will purchase a new inflatable toy for children to use in the pool area.  This inflatable toy will enable the YMCA to diversify their aquatic program by adding an element of fun and excitement that the current pool facility doesn't provide.  It will also provide opportunities for families to play together.
  • Sharpe Education, Inc., who operates two childcare centers called Miss Peggy's House, one located in Belpre, Ohio and one located in Marietta, Ohio, was awarded $5,790 to replace a refrigerator/freezer at the Marietta location.  The current refrigerator/freezer was nonfunctioning and did not fulfill the requirement of the Marietta City Health Department to be able to serve food.  The two centers serve families from Washington and Morgan Counties in Ohio and Wood County in West Virginia. They offer quality care for children and this enables parents to work or increase their education without worrying about their child's care. Because they contract with the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services, families of low income can get this same quality service.
  • Harmar Rowing Club was awarded $8,000 to help with the completion of the Carl L. Broughton Boat House.  This project has been a dream of the Club and discussed for years and the granting of the lease for property directly north of the Marietta College Boathouse by the City spurred the Club to launch these plans.  A generous donation from the Carl L. Broughton family provided the impetus for the fundraising campaign by the Club. The Boathouse will help with storage and provide a site for conditioning for amateur rowers in the Mid-Ohio Valley. This will also be the home to the Marietta High School rowing team and provide more space to the many spectators and participants at regattas and races.  The building will be handicap accessible, which will help to include opportunities for handicapped persons to experience the sport of rowing.  It is hoped that the completion date for this project will be Spring.
  • Community 2020, the administrative agent for both the Shared-Use Kitchen project and the Colony Theatre Restoration project, was awarded $25,489 to help with work on both projects.  The Colony Theatre restoration project received $11, 000 to help finance the preliminary work to be done for a feasibility study on the theatre.  $14,489 was awarded to help with the Shared-Use or Community Kitchen project.  These funds are to help support the work associated with beginning the Shared Kitchen and to help with the purchase of equipment to be used in the kitchen. The Shared-Use Kitchen group (Marietta Kitchen Creations) is a group of farmers and food entrepreneurs in Washington and Nobel Counties that aims to develop a shared use kitchen for the use by residents of the surrounding area to process local food items for sale.  This kitchen will provide a licensed facility to help local food producers.  The establishment of a shared use or community kitchen is intended to help encourage local food production.
  • The Humane Society of the Ohio Valley was awarded a grant of $8,000 to help build animal runs at the shelter.  These runs provide exercise for the animals living there.  Currently the shelter provides only two large runs for the animals and are in need of more.  The community will be involved with the building of the much needed runs.  The Society is wanting ten of the runs to have access from their inside runs.  More gifts are needed to complete this project.
Members of the Allocations Committee are Teri Ann Zide Pfeffer, Chairman, Cheryl Cook, Jack Moberg, Ron Bishop and Joan Hushion. Their recommendations were approved by the Board of Governors at the past board meeting.
