New Funds Established at Marietta Community Foundation
Marietta Community Foundation has had the privilege of working with donors in establishing scholarships, funds to assist youth and funds to meet needs of community service organizations.
Two scholarships to assist area students while memorializing loved ones have been started.
One can never truly measure the impact scholarships have on youth. They help lighten the financial load of post-secondary education and in some cases, enable a youth to continue their education when financial help is needed. At the same time, named scholarships offer a way to honor or memorialize a loved one or friend.
Such was the case with Melissa Ann Weckbacher Memorial Scholarship and Anna Laura Masters Scholarship, recently established with Marietta Community Foundation by their families.
The Melissa Ann Weckbacher Memorial Scholarship has been established to honor the memory of Melissa Weckbacher, killed in a car accident on September 27, 2001.
Melissa was a second year PSEO student at Washington State Community College, with Fort Frye being her home School. She was a member of the Lowell Pioneer 4-H Club and involved in school activities such as prom and homecoming.
Her parents, William and Kimberly Wechbacker and her sister Natalie Weckbacher, wanted to honor the memory of Melissa by offering annual scholarships to graduating seniors at Fort Frye High School. Recipients will be chosen by a selection committee set up at the school.
Anna Laura Masters Scholarship has been established to honor the memory of Anna Masters, a 1999 graduate from Warren High School, killed in a car accident. Anna was the editor of the yearbook and involved in many activities in and outside of school. She was the beloved daughter of Jeffrey and Christina Masters and sister to Jacob Masters.
The scholarship in her memory will offer a scholarship to a graduating senior from Warren High School who will be attending Washington State Community College pursuing a career as a medical lab technician or pursuing a career in the health field.
Washington County Habitat for Humanity has established two individual funds, Washington County Habitat for Humanity Activities Fund and the Washington County Habitat for Humanity Endowment Fund. The organization has decided to take the necessary steps to its future. The Activities Fund purpose is to help fund current activities of the organization. Funding on-going projects and purchasing supplies needed. The Endowment Fund will be used to build financial resources that may be needed in the future. The Habitat for Humanity Board hopes that there are people interested enough in their organization to make gifts to build the endowment and ensure its future.
The Foundation has been honored to also open the Leroy and Carol Gutberlet Foundation Fund. This Fund originally started as the Leroy Gutberlet Memorial Foundation and was managed by the Board of the Muskingum Valley Chamber. Carol Gutberlet, Leroy?s widow, and the Board of the Chamber, decided to turn the Foundation Fund over to the management of Marietta Community Foundation.
Leroy died of cancer in 1996. Owner of Leroy Gutberlet Chevrolet and Morgan County Chrysler, Plymoth, Jeep in McConnelsville, Leroy was a very active member in the his community. Active in many of the Automobile Associations, Vice President of Muskingum Valley Chamber, member of Morgan County Chamber, Rotary Club, Masons, Scottish Rite, Shrine Club, and many other community projects, Leroy gave of his time and of his money. He gave thousands of dollars each year at the area county fairs for livestock the youth had raised to further their education, bought computers for many of the schools, and gave to many projects that were helping area youth.
The Foundation was started as a way to memorialize Leroy and carry on the work he was a part of. It has already made gifts to many area youth. The purpose of the Fund is to provide financial resources for activities that promote youth development.
