Foundation Awards More than $30,000 to Area Non-profits

Second Cycle grants totaling more than $30,000 were awarded by Marietta Community Foundation.
Recipients are:
-Community Action Program Corporation of Morgan/Washington County received an award of $5,000. This award is to be used to help Community Action recruit a dentist for the Southeastern Dental Clinic which losts its' dentist this winter. The clinic opened in 1998 with the goal to provide access to preventative and corrective dentistry for low-income residents and families with medical cards but who can't gain access to dental services. The clinic is self-sufficient for daily operations.
-Ely Chapman Education Foundation received funding of $7,500 to match funds for the purchase of a van to transport students who attend Ely Chapman's educational programs offered throughout the year. The programs at the Foundation provide a variety of educational enrichment programs to the community, expecially for at risk school-aged youth. Approximately 350 youth participate each year in the programs offered. The programs provide a wide range of educational opportunities. The S.U.N.S.H.I.N.E. Learning Station currently serves at-risk students through an after-school program of individualized and small group educational services. Another program offered is a collaboration between Washington County's Children Services, Marietta College's McDonough Center for Leadership and Business and the Ely Chapman Education Foundation offering an environmental science leadership camp that youth from every school district in Washington County participate. The Foundation also provides the opportunity for students to go out on the Muskingum River for educational purposes in a 30 foot long pontoon boat.
-Marietta Memorial Health Foundation was awarded $15,000 to match funds for the construction of a customized Blood Coach vehicle to enhance collection of blood products for area physicians in treating local residents. Marietta Memorial operates one of the only two hospital-based blood banks in Ohio. Nearly 90% of the blood its patients use is drawn locally. The purchase of a mibile donor coach (Blood Mobile)ensures the blook supplies our community needs. The fully equipped four-bed coach will enable Blood Bank staff to visit multiple sites each day, meeting highest standards for blood collection, donor privacy and cost effectiveness.
-Our Lade of Mercy Preschool, located in Lowell, received $738 to purchase supplies for the upcoming school year and to assist families with tuition. Our Lady of Mercy Preschool is the only preschool in the Lowell area, providing services since 1996 when the Lowell Preschool ceased operations. The school offers two classes, an Early Learning Class for three and four year olds, and a Pre-K Class for four and five year olds.
-Washington County Historical Society was awarded $2,500 to publish a 60-page educators guide for Washington County Schools. This guide will list all of the historic sites, museums, living history, and educational outreach programs available to teachers in Washington County. This project is in collaboration with the Washington County Bicentennial Committee. The goal of this specific project is to create an awareness of the many history-related programs available to educators in Washington County.
Grants awarded from unrestricted funds, are recommended by the Foundation's Allocations Committee and approved by the Board of Governors. The next deadline for grant applications is Oct. 7, 2002.
