Scholarship Offered to Honor Marietta Man
Posted 2007-01-16 by MCF

The J. William Morris Scholarship will be offered through the Marietta Community Foundation.  Created by the estate of F. Isabel Morris in honor of her husband, the scholarship will offer $5,000 to local students who "...specified an interest in achieving a business administration, accounting or finance major at a four year college or university."
Mr. Morris was a strong advocate for education according to those who worked with him at Peoples Bank.  "... it's fitting that a scholarship is being established.  Bill believed in education and encouraged me to obtain my master's degree during the time I worked for him," said Carol Schneeberger of Peoples Bancorp.  Another co-worker, Karen Clark, who was encouraged to get a degree while working with him quotes Mr. Morris, "It (college education) may not make you smarter, but it opens doors for you."
Mrs. Morris worked at Marietta Memorial Hospital and was a dedicated member of St. Luke's Episcopal Church.  Mr. Morris served as auditor of Peoples Bank until his retirement in 1987.  He was active with Washington-Morgan Community Action and served in the Navy during World War II.
Applications will be sent to the Guidance Office of all Washington County high schools.  Students are encouraged to check with their Guidance Counselors for more information.
The Marietta Community Foundation helps generous families leave a true philanthropic legacy for the community.  It has $7 million in assets and in 2004 distributed over $600,000 to local projects in the name of generous people like Mr. & Mrs. Morris.  For more information, call (740) 373-3286 or visit www.mariettacommunityfoundation.org.
